The standard fuel tank on the DAF is 120L, which according to Beep Beep Africa<\/a> would give a real-world range of 330 miles driving a T244 around Africa. This was far shorter than our goal of 1,000 miles. Whilst we could have added a second tank, given the condition of ours, and the inefficient use of the space (it is not very tall, so has a large protruding filler neck), we decided to look for a larger replacement.<\/p>\n

After some research we discovered MetalTanks.com<\/a> which have a huge range of custom-made fuel tanks. You pick the profile of the tank from their existing designs but can then choose any length to suit your needs.<\/p>\n

We picked a profile of 20″ x 27″, which made full use of the space of the existing tank without really taking up any additional space. We then went for 38″ length, which got us to a 310L (82 gallons) tank, a range of about 850 miles.<\/p>\n

The tank came with new mounting brackets, which I ordered without any holes. With careful planning, this allowed me to make use of the existing holes on the chassis and save drilling any new ones. Hence the rather random bolt pattern, which played havoc with my OCD!<\/p>\n
