A radiator works by flowing the coolant through 100s of small fins that have a massive surface area, allowing air to lower the temperature. Unfortunately, this also allows a huge amount of sand to get stuck, as illustrated by the photo above.
After rinsing out all the sand it was clear there was reasonable amount of damage, so we decided to get it pressure tested.
Seattle Radiator Works carried out a pressure test for us and advised us to get both the radiator and heater core re-cored. They did a fantastic job, and even repainted the radiator, which saved me another job!
